West Wight Landscape Character Assessment, September 2005

This comprehensive study examines the landscape character of the western side of the Isle of Wight. It establishes:

• how and why the West Wight is a valued and distinctive part of the heritage of the UK

• records what local people and visitors value about the landscape

• identifies forces for change (past and future)

• provides information to guide and influence those responsible for developing projects and policies to conserve and enhance the West Wight landscape

This study provides a comprehensive heritage audit of the landscape of the West Wight and to present the results using a variety of different media. The report summarises known archaeological sites and highlights those that are under threat through erosion, plough damage etc.

This report presents the findings of a systematic field survey of the landscape of the West Wight undertaken by volunteers under the guidance of Wessex Archaeoology.

Heathland Survey of Ningwood Common, Isle of Wight, July 2010

Work has been done at Cranmore on the Isle of Wight to restore scrub and pine plantation back into heathland. Some parts remain as ancient heath whereas the rest has been restored at stages in 2005 and 2008. Sections of the heath have been grazed in this time and others have not. This study aims to look at the species diversity of the different ages of heath and to determine whether this is effected by grazing.
